Access Points: Critical Lifelines for People Experiencing Homelessness
In cities across the US, homelessness remains a pressing concern, with individuals and families facing the daily struggle of accessing food, shelter, safety, and stability. For many, the first step toward overcoming homelessness is connecting with the right resources at the right time. This is where our Continuum of Care’s Access Points play a pivotal role.
What Are Access Points?
Access Points are designated locations within a community where people experiencing homelessness can get immediate help. These hubs serve as a gateway to a wide array of services from local providers, including shelter, food, healthcare, as well as support for long-term self-sustainability. For folx who have nowhere else to turn, Access Points are critical lifelines that help them navigate the overwhelming process of finding assistance.
The Role of Access Points in Homelessness Support
Access Points are often the first step in a longer journey to sustainable supports that minimize a person’s experience with homelessness. They are centralized locations where people can get connected to the right services for their immediate, short-term needs and develop plans for the long-term. In our metro tri-county community, our Access Points can provide or connect people with a range of services, such as:
Emergency Shelter: Providing a safe place to sleep for individuals who would otherwise be living on the street.
Meals and Food: Connecting individuals with food banks, hot meals, groceries, or other food resources, ensuring basic nutrition needs are met.
Case Management: Offering personalized support to help individuals find housing, access healthcare, and achieve employment or other forms of self-sufficiency.
Mental Health Services: Addressing the psychological and emotional needs of those experiencing homelessness, especially those who may also be struggling with trauma or addiction.
Access Points are not just places to get immediate help, but can also act as portals to longer-term support, offering individuals the tools they need to transition out of homelessness and into more stable, independent lives.
Your Support Matters
The work done at Access Points relies heavily on donations, volunteers, and the backing of local communities. Our partner organizations that manage Access Points need your support. Your involvement in supporting these services, whether through donations or volunteering, plays a critical role in offering a lifeline to those experiencing homelessness. If you are able, please consider supporting Threshold CoC and our Access Point partner organizations.
